WORDS TO KNOW

wind shear: a change in the direction of wind, especially when wind blows in different directions at different heights.

supercell: a severe thunderstorm with strong updrafts and downdrafts of air. Supercells often have large hail, strong winds, downpours, and sometimes tornadoes.

condense: to change from a gas to a liquid.

TORNADOES!

Tornadoes can break a tree in half, smash a house, or even move a train down the tracks! They are the most violent storms on Earth. Inside a tornado, winds twist upward in a funnel-shaped column anywhere from 90 to 300 miles per hour (145 to 483 kilometers per hour)! Tornadoes are most likely to occur in the United States in the months of April, May, and June, in the heat of the late afternoon. About 1,000 tornadoes are reported each year.

Tornadoes occur all over the world, but there are more tornadoes in the United States than in any other country.

A tornado, also called a twister, often travels in a curved path, and it can be hard to predict which way it will go next. It usually moves over land at about 30 miles per hour or less (48 kilometers), but sometimes faster. It can last for only a few seconds, or for hours. Tornadoes can look like a thin needle or a bowl. Each one is different, but they’re all powerful and potentially dangerous.
